2013 BIG BEAT

On Sunday, October 13, drummers from as far as Youngstown, assembled at Lake Catholic High School in Mentor to raise money to buy local schools much needed percussion instruments.  Big Beat 2013 generated $8,500, as 60+ drum sets were packed into the LC gym.  The funds will go to Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, who will then select a qualifying school in the Lake County area.  (Previous recipients are: Cleveland All City Drumline, Willowick Middle School, Ashtabula Lakeside High School, Painesville Heritage Middle School, Geneva High School)  Total raised through 2013 is a little over $50,000.

This was the 6th annual Big Beat presented by Stebal Drums.  The event assembles drummers for a world record attempt of the greatest number of drummers playing in unison.  The participants raise money through pledges by family, friends, employers, etc.   Local companies also sponsor the official Big Beat Shirts, and donate food for the event.  Stebal Drums contacted major drum companies who donated over $10,000 worth of drum gear, which was used to award top pledge raisers, and raffled off at the event.

Performances at Big Beat 2013 were kicked off by the Geneva High School Drumline, with their new drums, which were awarded  to them from last year’s Big Beat event.  Local drum educator Dave Brewer & Universal Percussion (drum wholesaler) owner Tom Shelley united all drummers to play rhythms together.   Local Braziian bacteria Samba Joia wowed the drummers with their vibrant Brazilian music.
Last but not least, local Rockers,  “Raised on Rock” performed signature classics allowing all drummers to play along and become the worlds largest rhythm section!

Founded in 1996, Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation donates new and refurbished musical instruments to underserved schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, helping them be better students and inspire creativity and expression through playing music. Since its inception, MHOF programs have benefited more than 500,000 students and have enabled hundreds of dedicated teachers to provide a better learning experience in school.
